2013 - Project of mangrove planting & supporting local typhoon victims

As part of our corporate philosophy to become “Good Company”, we always seek what lies beyond profit and one of which is to contribute to local society to enhance local peoples’ lives.

Two major corporate social activities we implemented during the year 2013 were mangrove planting and financial support to local citizens who are victims of natural disasters.

1.       “Mangrove Planting” – Protecting natural environment

Participating in mangrove planting project is one of traditional environmental protection activities of Bao Viet Tokio Marine Insurance Company. On the occasion of 40-year anniversary of diplomatic relation between Japan & Vietnam, the campaign took place in September 2013 in Dong Rui commune, Tien Yen district, Quang Ninh Province with the participation of nearly 90 volunteers, including not only BVTM staffs but also lots of volunteers of Tokio Marine Global Group. Supported by the Mangrove Ecosystem Research Division – Centre for Natural Resource & Environmental Study of Vietnam, the project was initiated to contribute to preservation of local biodiversity and protection of natural environment.

Over three day campaign, mangrove trees were planted over 665 hectares throughout the region. In addition, a visit to local primary school was also made for delivering scholarships to provide financial aids to poor students and present an environmental education program, “Green Lesson: The Mangrove Story” on how the planting of mangrove trees and initiatives contribute to the prevention of global warming and preservation of biodiversity.

1.     2.  “Charity Activity in the Central of Vietnam” - Supporting victims of natural disaster

Located in the Asia Pacific Region, Vietnam is prone to typhoons and tropical depressions which are the major causes of damage in Vietnam as a result of natural disaster. Vietnam suffers from 5-7 typhoons annually, mostly in the Central area of the country. As part of national sharing tradition, the company annually share burden with local victims of typhoons by raising a charity fund.

In 2013, a number of big typhoons and their aftermaths in the Central area took a huge toll on lives of local inhabitants with hundreds of people died and injured and thousands of houses collapsed and crops destroyed. Responding to emergency relief activities throughout the nation, a call for donation to typhoon victims were made throughout the company and all staffs of BVTM actively participated with both financial & material donation. As a result, a total aid of VND 50 million was raised together with lots of other material stuffs such as clothes and stationeries.

In November 2013, a team of young volunteers of BVTM made a meaningful trip to directly deliver all financial aids and material donations to 100 poor households of minorities in the Central of Vietnam who are seriously affected by natural disaster, which was deeply appreciated by both local authorities as well as all victims who received such support.

It is believed a rewarding activity that all BVTM members could join hands to help affected people back on their feet to carry on as strong as they were.
